Under a Vimto Sky, like many works right now, reflects on the experiences of living in the North of the UK at this unprecedented time. The name was inspired by a social media post by the M.E.N., showing a Manchester sunset, declaring it a, ‘Real Vimto sky’. Having noticed the subtle changes in hue at sunset around the country and wider world, and even differences in the character of light itself, this connected immediately. The comparison with Vimto, that Elixir of working class children across the North-west, was particularly apt. As society grows more divided, and the poor, poorer, the ground beneath may be owned by the ruling class but the sky will always be theirs.
The first half of the EP is concerned with recent issues of being misled, manipulation and cohersion. Deepfake’s offbeat, skittering grooves and robotic vocals achieves thus through dehumanising the human, and humanising the inhuman. Cognitive Dissonance, in contrast, places itself as gaslit, spurned and abused lover, processing the conflict between belief and reality.
Together Apart represents a pivotal moment. It reflects upon the duality of polarised division in a society that ultimately aims for similar goals, but also beauty of humanities ability to survive together when challenged.
The remaining tracks take a more positive view of the impending future. The Ruins of Time Build Mansions in Eternity concerns itself with the bittersweet nature of the human experience. Beginning and ending with the sounds of children playing, the piece’s sense of life’s circularity is evident. The fleeting nature of existence and beauty found even in its worst moments underpin its key themes.
As if to represent faith in the generation due to inherit our society, the E.P. finishes with the assurance that, Wisdom is King’, as an antidote to the belief that expertise cannot be trusted. Riffing dub vocals over rolling beats and bass, it leaves the listener with hope, at least for now.
